- : Hi all,
-
- : I kind of got into this conversation in the middle and maybe my question was
- : already answered...
-
- : At home I have a 486 and an A2000. I am in the process of building a server
- : that will be running Netware 3.12.
- : 1) Will I be able to set up the Netware server to fully support the Amiga?
-
- It depends. With the Oxxi Amiga Client Software, yes, pretty much.
-
- : 2) Will I be able to run Amiga executeables stored on the server or will I be
- : limited to just file storage and printing?
-
- Files is files. The server doesn't care about the contents, so yes.
-
- : 3) What Novell client software is available for the Amiga, if any?
-
- The Oxxi one, which is now sold by somebody else who posted here recently
- (can't remember).
-
- Alternatives:
-
- 1. Run AmiTCP, buy NetWare NFS server for about $1200/2 user. Or an
- alternative NFS server may be cheaper, haven't tried them.
-
- 2. Run a NetWare FTP server, and access it with an AmiTCP FTP client.
- This is inexpensive, considering the Hellsoft FTP server is free. The
- catch is that you are limited to good old 8.3 filenames and of course
- there's no printer support.
-
- 2A. Use the newly-uploaded-to-Aminet program that claims to mount a
- remote FTP site as a file system. I haven't yet tried this, but it
- sounds good.
-
- : 4) PC NICs may be had very inexpensively -- how much should I expect to pay
- : for one for the Amiga?
-
- Between $279 and $300, US. When the 3Com cards for the PC were still
- $150, it wasn't such a bad comparison, but with PC cheapies available for
- $40 or less, it looks worse.
